Nursing Home Administrator Continuing Education

Hours: 40 Hours
Frequency: Biennially

 

Proof of completion of 40 continuing education credits during the last two years shall be submitted together with an application for reinstatement of an active license.

Administrator Continuing Education

Hours: 40 Hours
Frequency: Biennially

 

40 hours of continuing education shall be completed biennially.

20 hours may be online (no more than 10 completed in one day). The total units (40) must include:
At least four (4) hours of instruction in laws, regulations, policies and procedural standards that impact your type of care facility (e.g., ARF, GH, RCFE);
If not included in your ICTP, at least one (1) hour of instruction in cultural competency and sensitivity in issues related to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
For RCFE (and RCFE/NHA) certificate holders, at least eight (8) hours in subjects related to serving residents with Alzheimer’s Disease or other dementias. 

HIV and TB training as required by Health and Safety Code Section 1562.5.

RCFE/NHA holders must complete 20 hours of continuing education.

Administrator Sexual Harassment Training

Hours: 2 Hours
Frequency: Within 6 months of Hire and every 2 years

 

An employer having 50 or more employees shall provide at least two hours of classroom or other effective interactive training and education regarding sexual harassment to all supervisory employees who are employed as of July 1, 2005, and to all new supervisory employees within six months of their assumption of a supervisory position.

Each employer covered by this section shall provide sexual harassment training and education to each supervisory employee once every two years. The training and education required by this section shall include information and practical guidance regarding the federal and state statutory provisions concerning the prohibition against and the prevention and correction of sexual harassment and the remedies available to victims of sexual harassment in employment. The training and education shall also include practical examples aimed at instructing supervisors in the prevention of harassment, discrimination, and retaliation, and shall be presented by trainers or educators with knowledge and expertise in the prevention of harassment, discrimination, and retaliation.

All Staff Abuse Prevention Training

Hours: Topic Specific
Frequency: Annually

 

All facility personnel must receive annual, in-service training in identifying, reporting and preventing suspected abuse or neglect, and the facility develops and maintains policies and procedures for the prevention of abuse and neglect and accidents.

Direct Care Staff Continuing Education

Hours: Level Specific
Frequency: Annually

 

Service Level 2 Direct Care Staff: 8 hours within 12 month period.
Service Level 3 & 4 Direct Care Staff: 12 hours within each 12 month period.

Service Level 3 direct care staff shall complete a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education within each twelve-month period following the assumption of the duties of direct care staff.

Service Level 4 direct care staff shall:
Complete a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education which meets the requirements within each twelve-month period following the assumption of the duties of direct care staff.

Direct care staff shall complete any additional training in a specific knowledge area(s) which has been identified as needing improvement in the written notification pursuant to Section 56033(d)(2).  

Service Level 2, 3 and 4 administrators shall ensure that each direct care staff person meets applicable requirements as follows:
1. Within the first 40 hours of providing consumer services in the facility, all new direct care staff shall complete an on-site orientation which addresses the following:
      A. The facility's program design;
      B. Consumer IPPs;
      C. Consumers' rights regulations;
      D. Assistance to consumers with prescribed medications, if applicable;
      E. Health and emergency procedures, including fire safety;
      F. Identification and reporting of Special Incidents, as required by Title 17, California Code of Regulations, Section 54327(a); and
      G. Identification and reporting of consumer abuse.
2. Receive on-the-job training as necessary to implement consumer IPPs.
3. Receive continuing education in one or more of the following areas, as they relate to planning and implementation of residential services for persons with developmental disabilities:
      A. Consumer services as described in the program design;
      B. Promotion of consumers' rights, health, safety, and social and physical integration; and
      C. The ID Team process, including development and implementation of IPPs.

Medication Training Continuing Education

Hours: 8 Hours
Frequency: Annually

 

Each employee who received training and passed the examination required in paragraph (5) of subdivision (a) (HSC § 1569.69) and who continues to assist with the self-administration of medicines, shall also complete eight hours of in-service training on medication-related issues in each succeeding 12-month period.

Dementia Special Care Continuing Education

Hours: 8 Hours
Frequency: Within 12 months and each succeeding 12 months

 

Direct care staff shall complete at least eight hours of in-service training on the subject of serving residents with dementia within 12 months of working in the facility and in each succeeding 12-month period.

Direct care staff hired as of July 3, 2004 shall complete the eight hours of in-service training within 12 months of that date and in each succeeding 12-month period.
(A) A minimum of two of the following training topics shall be covered annually, and all topics shall be covered within a three-year period:
     1. Effects of medications on the behavior of residents with dementia;
     2. Common problems, such as wandering, aggression, and inappropriate sexual behavior;
     3. Positive therapeutic interventions and activities such as exercise, sensory stimulation, activities of daily living, and social, recreational and rehabilitative activities;
     4. Communication skills (resident/staff relations);
     5. Promoting resident dignity, independence, individuality, privacy and choice; and
     6. End of life issues, including hospice.

Certified Nurse Assistant Continuing Education

Hours: 48 Hours
Frequency: Biennially

 

Completion of the required twenty- four (24) hours of in-service training or continuing education per year for a total of forty-eight (48) hours within the two (2) year renewal period.

The in-service training and continuing education shall include multiple topics.

Medication Distribution Continuing Education

Hours: 4 Hours
Frequency: Annually

 

Those who continue to assist with the self-administration of medicines, shall also complete four hours of in-service training on medication-related issues in each succeeding 12-month period.

Registered Nurse Continuing Education

Hours: 30 Hours
Frequency: Every 2 years

 

Each licensee shall submit proof satisfactory to the Board that during the preceding renewal period or preceding two years, the licensee has started and successfully completed thirty (30) hours of continuing education approved by the Board.
