Assisted Living

Nursing Home Administrator Continuing Education

Hours: 48 Hours
Frequency: Biennially

Continuing education programs consisting of Board approved seminars, resident or extension courses, conferences and workshops totaling 48 hours or more, on any of the subject areas enumerated below, are required for biennial licensure of a license as a Nursing Home Administrator.

Content of programs of continuing education shall include one or more of the following general subject areas or their equivalents:

       1. Applicable standards of environmental health and safety,
       2. Local health and safety regulations,
       3. General Administration,
       4. Psychology of patient care,
       5. Principles of medical care,
       6. Personal and social care,
       7. Therapeutic and supportive care and services in long-term care,
       8. Department organization and management,
       9. Community interrelationships, and,
      10. Business or financial management.

Medication Assistant Training

Hours: Topic Specific
Frequency: New Hire


Assistance with Self-Administration of Medication” (“AWSAM”) - Help with medication provided by facility personnel who are not nurses or nurse practitioners but who have successfully completed a Board of Nursing-approved medication training program in accordance with the Delaware Nurse Practice Act, 24 Del.C. Ch. 19, and applicable rules and regulations.

Paid Feeding Assistant Training

Hours: 12 Hours
Frequency: Initial


Program must be approved by the department and completed prior to providing services.

Resident Assistant Continuing Education

Hours: 12 Hours
Frequency: Annually


Complete 12 hours of annual training including:

1. Fire and life safety, and emergency disaster plans;
2. Infection control, including Standard Precautions;
3. Basic food safety;
4. Basic first aid and the Heimlich Maneuver;
5. Job responsibilities;
6. The health and psychosocial needs of the population being served;
7. The resident assessment process; and
8. The use of service agreements;
9. 16 Del.C. Ch. 11, pertaining to residents’ rights; reporting of abuse, neglect, mistreatment, and financial exploitation; and the Ombudsman Program;
10. Hospice services; and
11. Receive training to competently assist in activities of daily living or provide documentation of such training

CNA Continuing Education

Hours: 24 Hours
Frequency: Every 24 months


In addition to the 64-hour work requirement within each 24-month recertification period, CNAs are also required to complete 24 hours of continuing education found at the free Elsevier website which includes:

A minimum of 6 hours of dementia training;
A minimum of 2 hours of patient abuse prevention/maltreatment training; and,
The balance of required hours will be in other general health care topics.

All Staff FEMA Training

Hours: 24 Hours
Frequency: Every 24 months


The courses must be taken every 24 months.

FEMA ICS-100 is only offered by FEMA. 
FEMA NIMS-700a is only offered by FEMA.

All Staff Alzheimer’s Disease or other forms of Dementia training

Hours: Topic Specific
Frequency: New Hire and Annually


The mandatory training must include:

communicating with persons diagnosed as having Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia;
the psychological, social, and physical needs of those persons;
and safety measures which need to be taken with those persons.
