Nursing Home Administrator Continuing Education

Hours: 40 Hours
Frequency: Biennially

 

To satisfy the requirements of this rule, in each biennium a licensee shall have a minimum of forty (40) contact hours of continuing education credit.

In any biennium:

a. A licensee shall have a minimum of twenty (20) contact hours of continuing education credits that include personal attendance at a live presentation.

b. A licensee is allowed a maximum of twenty (20) contact hours of continuing education credits for web-based, video or audio-transmitted, or on-line instruction programs that require the licensee to interact or communicate back and forth with the instructor during the presentation of the program.

c. A licensee is allowed a maximum of ten (10) contact hours of home-study continuing education credits. Home-study education is independent study and includes pre-recorded programs that were previously classified as live or interactive under paragraphs (2)(a) and (b). A validation form shall be signed by the vendor and licensee verifying the subject covered and total viewing time. Home-study courses must not exceed five (5) contact hours per subject.

d. A licensee shall complete two (2) contact hours of continuing education relating to the prevention of medical errors.

Administrator Continuing Education

Hours: 12 Hours
Frequency: Biennially

 

Administrators and managers shall participate in 12 hours of continuing education in topics related to assisted living every 2 years.

Administrator Extended Congregate Care Training

Hours: 4 Hours
Frequency: Every 2 years

 

The administrator and extended congregate care supervisor, if different from the administrator, shall complete 4 hours of training every 2 years in topics relating to the physical, psychological, or social needs of frail elderly and disabled persons, or persons with Alzheimer’s disease or related disorders.

Medication Assistant Continuing Education

Hours: 2 Hours
Frequency: Annually

 

A minimum of 2 hours of continuing education training on providing assistance with self-administered medications and safe medication practices in an assisted living facility is required.

The 2 hours of continuing education training shall only be provided by a licensed registered nurse, or a licensed pharmacist.

Limited Mental Health Continuing Education

Hours: 3 Hours
Frequency: Biennially

 

A minimum of 3 hours of continuing education, which may be provided by the ALF administrator or through distance learning, biennially thereafter in subjects dealing with one or more of the following topics:

a. Mental health diagnoses; and

b. Mental health treatment such as mental health needs, services, behaviors and appropriate interventions; resident progress in achieving treatment goals; how to recognize changes in the resident’s status or condition that may affect other services received or may require intervention; and crisis services and the Baker Act procedures.

Assisted Living ADRD Continuing Education

Hours: 4 Hours
Frequency:  Annually

 

Assisted Living Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders training completed annually.

Food Service Supervisor Continuing Education

Hours: 2 Hours
Frequency:  Annually

 

A minimum of 2 hours continuing education in topics pertinent to nutrition and food service in an assisted living facility.

A certified food manager, licensed dietician, registered dietary technician or health department sanitarians are qualified to train assisted living facility staff in nutrition and food service.

Certified Nurse Aide Continuing Education

Hours: 24 Hours
Frequency:  Each biennium

 

The training shall be prorated to 1.0 hours of in-service training per month from the month of initial certification to the end of the biennium.  All CNAs must complete a minimum of 24 hours of in-service training each biennium.

In-service training hours shall include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

    1. Bloodborne Pathogens
    2. Infection Control
    3. Domestic Violence
    4. Medical Record Documentation and Legal Aspects Appropriate to Nursing Assistants
    5. Resident Rights
    6. Communication with cognitively impaired clients
    7. CPR skills
    8. Medical Error Prevention and Safety

Nurse Continuing Education

Hours: 24 Hours
Frequency:  Biennially

 

All Florida-licensed LPNs, RNs, CNSs and ARNPs are now in a 24-month renewal cycle and must complete 24 hours of appropriate continuing education during each renewal period.

The 24 hours must include two (2) hours on Prevention of Medical Errors, two (2) hours in Laws and Rules that govern the practice of Nursing, and (2) hours in recognizing impairment in the workplace effective August 1, 2017 and every other biennium thereafter (every 4 years).

HIV/AIDS is now a one-time, 1-hour CE requirement to be completed prior to the first renewal.
Domestic Violence (DV) CE is now a 2-hour requirement every third renewal (every 6 years).

For biennial renewal on or after January 1, 2019, a two hour course on human trafficking, and each biennium thereafter.

Since Domestic Violence (DV) is a 2-hour requirement, the licensee will have 26 hours of CE during the renewal period when DV is taken.
