RCA and HFA Continuing Education

Hours: 40 Hours
Frequency: Biennially

 

An HFA or RCA must complete at least forty (40) continuing education hours during the previous two (2) year licensing period.

An HFA or RCA who is not currently or previously licensed in another state is not required to complete the continuing education requirements for the two (2) year licensing period in which the license was issued.

If the licensee holds both an HFA and an RCA license, only forty (40) hours of continuing education is required for renewal of both licenses. The requirement of continuing education having been met for one (1) license will have the effect of meeting the requirements for the other license.

All Staff Continuing Education

Hours: 6 Hours
Frequency: Annually

 

There shall be an organized ongoing in-service education and training program planned in advance for all personnel.

This training shall include, but not be limited to, the following:
1. Resident Rights
2. Prevention and control of infection.
3. Fire prevention.
4. Safety and accident prevention.
5. Needs of specialized populations served.
6. Care of cognitively impaired residents

Director for the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Special Care Unit Continuing Education

Hours: 6 Hours
Frequency: Annually

 

The director shall have a minimum of twelve (12) hours of dementia-specific training within three (3) months of initial employment as the director of the Alzheimer's and dementia special care unit and six (6) hours annually thereafter to:

1. meet the needs or preferences, or both, of cognitively impaired residents; and
2. gain understanding of the current standards of care for residents with dementia

Direct Care Staff Alzheimer’s and Dementia Continuing Education

Hours: 3 Hours
Frequency: Annually

 

In addition to the required in-service hours, staff who have regular contact with residents shall have three (3) hours annually to meet the needs or preferences, or both, of cognitively impaired residents and to gain understanding of the current standards of care for residents with dementia.

Certified Nurse Aide Continuing Education

Hours: 12 Hours
Frequency: Annually

 

The facility must complete a performance review of every nurse aide at least once every twelve (12) months and must provide regular in-service education based on the outcome of these reviews.

The in-service training must be as follows:

1. Sufficient to ensure the continuing competence of nurse aides but must be no less than twelve (12) hours per year.
2. Address areas of weakness as determined in nurse aides' performance reviews and may address the special needs of residents as determined by the facility staff.
3. For nurse aides providing services to individuals with cognitive impairments, also address the care of the cognitively impaired.  There shall be an organized ongoing in-service education and training program planned in advance for all personnel.

For nursing personnel, this shall include at least twelve (12) hours of in-service per calendar year.  This training shall include, but not be limited to, the following:

1. Resident Rights
2. Prevention and control of infection.
3. Fire prevention.
4. Safety and accident prevention.
5. Needs of specialized populations served.
6. Care of cognitively impaired residents
